Tokyo, 1943. Nobuko Imai studied at the Toho Music School of Tokyo, at the Yale University and the Juilliard School of New York. She has been the only violist who has won the highest prizes in the international viola competitions in Munich and Geneva. She has been a member of the Vermeer Quartet, and at the present time she carries out an important international career as performer and teacher of the Amsterdam Conservatory. Imai has been artistic adviser of the Tokyo Casals Hall for ten years and she has been also a member of the Saito Kinen Orchestra. Nobuko Imai has recorded numerous records for the labels Philips, Chandos, BIS and EMI, and also she has performed with the most prestigious worldwide orchestras, including the London, Montreal, Boston and Chicago symphonic orchestras, the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Royal Concertgebouw and L'Orchestre de Paris. Nobuko Imai has been artistic director of the International Hindemith Viola Festival celebrated in Tokyo, London and New York in 1995 and 1996. Among the many distinctions which she was obtained, they are found the Avon Art Prize (1993), Art Prize for Music of the Japan Ministry of Education (1994), Mobil Prize (1995) and the Suntory Music Prize (1996). In 2003, Nobuko Imai was distinguished with the Purple Medal by the Japanese government.
