Boston. Stefan Lano was born in Boston and he began his musical career as composer and pianist. In 1976, he came into the symphonic genre as composer and conductor with the premiere of his Symphony nº 1 at the Festival of Music of Newport. After his graduation from Harvard, he was granted a Fullbright scholarship to study in Germany, and Lorin Maazel asked him to become part of the staff of the Vienna Opera. In 1988, he was appointed associate conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, where he worked on both Symphonic and Opera repertoire. He has also worked in Europe, where he has recently conducted 'Turandot' by Puccini in Hamburg; 'Jakob Lenz' and 'Die Eroberung von Mexiko' by Wolfgang Rihm in Bonn and Nuremberg, the premiere of 'Rashomon' by Mayako Kubo in Graz, 'Le nozze di Figaro' by Mozart, in Basel and Munich, and the acclaimed productions of 'The Rake's Progress' by Stravinsky, 'Elektra' by Strauss and 'Jenufa' by Janácek, in Basel. Moreover, he has conducted the Pittsburgh Symphonic Orchestra, the Yomiuri Symphony of Japan, the Basler Symphoniker, the Nürnberger Philharmoniker and Symphoniker, the Rio de Janeiro Orchestra. Lano was invited to open the 1993 season of the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and, since then, has been a regular guest there, conducting 'Wozzeck' and 'Bluebeard's Castle', 'L'amour des trois oranges', 'Die Tote Stadt' and 'Salome'. He has been director of the Salzburg Festival, the Scala of Milan, the Liceu of Barcelona and the Opera of Cincinnati. Lano continues work on his compositions: he has recently completed his Symphony nº 3, and the Eikasia Variations for brass quintet must be pointed out from his chamber music works, it has been recorded by members of the Vienna Philharmonic.
